The Mykonos Locals Actually Love Mykonos off season

CURATED By ROS

Most people assume Mykonos is a summer-only destination.

They visit in July or August, love the energy, hate the crowds a little, and go home thinking that’s just how it is.

Here’s what they don’t know: the best version of the island shows up in September.

What actually changes when the season ends

The sea is still warm — around 24°C through most of September, sometimes into October. You’re not giving up swimming. You’re just getting the water to yourself.

The streets of Chora are walkable again. You can stop in the middle of an alley, look up at the bougainvillea, and take a photo without six strangers walking through it. The windmills at sunset are actually peaceful.

Restaurants that were impossible to get into four months ago have tables free. And the food is better — not because the chefs changed, but because they’re cooking for 40 covers instead of 200.

The service everywhere gets more personal. That’s just what happens when the island isn’t overwhelmed.

The villa situation in off-season

This is where it gets interesting.

A villa that was €18,000 a week in August might be €11,000 in October. Same pool, same view, same team looking after you. The price drops because the calendar is quieter — not because anything about the property got worse.

Some of the best villas in our portfolio are genuinely hard to book in peak season. They get reserved months out, sometimes a year ahead. From mid-September, they open up.

If you’ve always wanted to stay somewhere really special in Mykonos but the summer pricing felt out of reach — off-season is worth looking at seriously.

The places worth going to in off-season

Delos. The ancient ruins on the island just ten minutes by boat from Mykonos are incredible. In summer, you’re there with fifty other people on a guided tour. In September, you can genuinely explore at your own pace. It’s one of those experiences that feels completely different without the crowds.

The beaches. Psarou, Ornos, Panormos, Agia Anna, Kalo Livadi, Elia — in August these places are packed. In September you can actually enjoy them. The sea is still perfect, the beach clubs are still open, and you don’t need to arrive at 9am to get a good spot.

Mykonos Town. The architecture, the narrow streets, the famous pelicans wandering around — this is why people fall in love with the island. Off-season is when you can actually take it in slowly, without feeling like you’re moving through a crowd the whole time.

What about October?

Early October is still very good — warm, mostly sunny, most things still open. The island has thinned out noticeably but it hasn’t shut down.

Mid-October onwards starts to get variable. Some years are beautiful right to the end of the month. Others get rainy. It’s Greece, not the tropics, so there’s no guarantee. But if the weather plays along, it’s a great time to go.

By November, most villas and restaurants close up for the winter. That’s really when the season ends — so if you’re planning an off-season trip, September and October are your window.

Who off-season is actually for

It’s perfect for couples who want a relaxed trip without the party atmosphere. For families who found the peak season chaos a bit much. For anyone who’s been in summer and wants to see a different side of the island.

It’s probably not right for you if the nightlife and the full summer energy is specifically what you’re going for. Off-season Mykonos is beautiful, not buzzing.

We’ve been arranging stays here across every season. We know which villas are worth it in September, which restaurants stay open and stay good, and which experiences — a yacht day around the quieter coves, a private dinner on your terrace, a morning at Delos with barely anyone around — are genuinely at their best when summer has packed up.
