Most visitors treat Athens as a two-day stopover. Acropolis, Plaka, a rooftop dinner with a view of the Parthenon — then off to the islands. It’s a perfectly reasonable itinerary. It also skips one of the most compelling stretches of coastline in the Mediterranean.
The Athens Riviera runs south from Glyfada to Cape Sounion — roughly 70 kilometres of coastline that combines beach culture, serious dining, luxury villas, and a pace of life that feels entirely removed from the city centre. Athenians have known about it for generations. The rest of the world is only just catching up.
Where to base yourself:
Vouliagmeni
The jewel of the Riviera and the obvious place to base yourself if you want beach life with easy access to the city. A small peninsula with a thermal lake, pine-covered hills, and some of the best beach clubs in Greece. The Four Seasons Astir Palace sits here — and the area around it feels like a Mediterranean resort town rather than a suburb of a capital. The water is clean, the restaurants are excellent, and the sunset over the Saronic Gulf earns its reputation every evening.
Glyfada
More urban, more energetic. Glyfada is where Athenians go for a night out by the sea — the shopping, the beach clubs, the buzz of a summer evening. The energy here is closer to Mykonos than most people expect, at a fraction of the price. For guests who want the city and the coast in the same evening, Glyfada is the answer.
Lagonissi to Sounion
Further south, the coast becomes wilder and the crowds thin considerably. The Grand Resort Lagonissi offers private beach bungalows — one of the few resort properties in Greece where the privacy is genuinely private. Beyond it, the road follows clifftops toward Cape Sounion, where the Temple of Poseidon stands on a headland above the Aegean. Watching the sun drop behind the columns from that headland is one of the great experiences in Greece — and one that most visitors to Athens never make time for.
The beach clubs
The Riviera’s beach club scene has grown significantly in the last five years and now rivals the islands for quality — without the inflated summer pricing. Astir Beach in Vouliagmeni sets the standard: elegant, well-run, excellent food, and a crowd that is sophisticated rather than flashy. Island Club in Varkiza draws younger guests and more energy. Yabanaki, also in Varkiza, is the most family-friendly of the three. And the unnamed coves between Saronida and Sounion offer something no beach club can: complete solitude, accessible only if you know where to look. We do.
Dining on the Riviera
This is where the Riviera earns its reputation most convincingly. The seafood restaurants along this coast are among the finest in Greece — and that is not a claim made lightly. Ithaki in Vouliagmeni serves fish that was swimming hours before it reaches your plate. Moorings, on the marina, does modern Mediterranean with a view that improves every course. For something less formal, the fish tavernas in Varkiza and Lagonissi produce the kind of simple, perfectly grilled seafood that Greece does better than anywhere in the world — and at a price that will surprise you. Why it belongs in your Greek itinerary.
The Athens Riviera solves a problem most Greek itineraries have: the rushed transition between city and islands. Instead of a frantic morning departure from Athens to Mykonos, spend two or three nights on the coast first. Decompress. Swim. Eat properly. Visit Sounion at sunset. Arrive at the islands having already had a few days of Greece rather than a few days of airports and transfers. The season here is also longer than the islands — May through October is reliably warm, and April and November regularly produce days that would surprise you.
The Athens Riviera is not a secret to Greeks. To the rest of the world, it still largely is. That is, for now, part of its appeal.
